Aims:

The course will help students to understand the basic concepts and fundamental topics of philosophy of art. The course provides an introduction to the main theories on art, helping students to use the concepts of philosophy of art correctly, to interpret theoretical texts, to apply an appropriate interpretive perspective to artistic phenomena, to identify strong and weak arguments of discourses on art.

1. The relationship of art with other fields of culture (philosophy, religion, science)

2. The evolution of the term „art” (techne, ars, artes liberales, beaux arts)

3. What is art? Mimetic definition

4. Expressionism

5. Formalism

6. Contextualism, institutionalism.

7. Other perspectives on art (art as a game, as sublimation, relational art)

8. Artistic creation. The theory of the genius. „Everybody is an artist”

9. The work of art. The structure of the work of art. The art without a „work” (performance, concept-art, events, participative art)

10. The problem of authenticity. The forgery, the copy, the token

11. The reception of art. The interpretation of art. Intentionalism and antiintentionalism. The aesthetic pleasure

12.The critique of art. The taste. The value of the artwork.

13. The art in the context of museum and the market. The digitalisation and recontextualisation of art

14. Conclusion. What is art today?
