Practices and Theories of the Contemporary Art Institutions 2+1

Aims:

The aim of the course is to introduce various contemporary art institutional practices and their related theoretical background.  During the course we will analyze the artistic, cultural, social factors that led to the transformation of museums from the 1990s (new museology, radical museology, new institutionalism) and other institutional forms (e.g artist run spaces, art academies, biennales), in connection with relevant turns appeared in the contemporary art field (discursive turn, educational turn, performative turn).  The seminars will be based on close-readings and presentations and workshops

Topics:

1. Introduction to the course: Types of institutions in the contemporary art field. Historical and conceptual outlines of the course, introduction to the readings

2. Transformation of the Museum from the 18th to the present (public museum, avantgard museum, MoMA - type)

3. New terms in Museology: new museum, radical museology, critical museum theoretical approach and examples

4. New institutionalism in the contemporary art institutional field: changes in exhibition practices (Charles Esche, Maria Lind, Claire Doherty)

5. Contemporary Institutional Practices in Eastern Europe from the 1990s to the present

6. Turns in curatorial and museological practices I.

7. Turns in curatorial and museological practices II

8. Biennalisation - Classification of the biennales, their impact on the contemporary art scene. Case studies and critical approaches.
