Aims:

The course provides knowledge of the main moments in the history of exhibition design. The course will help students to approach solutions regarding the relationship between two-dimension. al graphics and three-dimensional space, to approach unique, original solutions regarding the relationship between graphic identity and exhibition, to develop the ability to work manually, and the capacity of completing the design process of exhibition

Topics:

1. Historical milestones in exhibition design. The formation of the museums (19th century). The evolution of modern display techniques (20th century). Recent developments (21th century)

2. The exhibition design as a collaboration between client and designer? The importance of the brief. What to consider when writing a brief? Strategy, content and assets, audience.

3. How does the visitor influence the process of exhibition design? Diverse audiences, varied needs, different layers of information. Different types of visitors

4. Branding and exhibition design. The brand experience and the visitor. Interpretation of the brand values by the designer

5. Working with the site. The decisive role of the site in exhibition's design. Importance of the storyline

6. Children and the exhibition. How children relate to displays?  Designing for several different age groups at once

7. Exhibition strategy. Classifying the exhibits. Different types of exhibitional paths.

8. The final design plan. Evolving a design. Moodboard. Circulation planning. The direction of flow.

9. The role of graphics in an exhibition. The appropriate treatment of text in an exhibition.

10. Legibility and readibility. Different font types in the relevance of readibility. The environment/context and legibiliy

11. Lighting. Daylight and artificial light and their role in exhibitions. Different types of light. The lighing plan

12. Interactivity. The importance of approachability and feedback. Different types of interactivity. Evolved sketch  of interactivity

13. The importance of linear media (audiovisuals) in the exhibitions. Types of linear media. The audiovisual brief.
