Aims:

The course aims to provide learners with a working knowledge regarding curating contemporary art in a global context.  It will help students to identify significant concepts and principles of curating, to communicate about visual art works and contexts in oral and written form, describe visual art in its cultural, social and historical contexts, to employ critical thinking, organisational and research skills in planning art exhibitions and events

Topics:

1. Historical brief and field of definition of the curatorial act.

2. Curator versus conservator; Collective exhibition, solo exhibition, group exhibition versus monograph

3. Exposure, (ex) position, (in) position, exhibits.

4. Presentation and representation policies

5. Social curating and the public

6. Public space and non-institutional frameworks. Art projects in the public space - curatorial principles

7. Sources, itineraries, references and making off. Why history matters in discussions of "global" contemporary art. East and west, center and periphery

8. Curating digital art
