Aims:

The course aims to develop students’ writing practice and develop their creative, critical and professional writing skills. It aims to discover how to make students’ writing more effective. The writing tasks are specifically designed to suit the program’s purposes therefore we will develop creative non-fiction writing within the field of art mediation, art criticism (art reviews, exhibition catalogue entries, project descriptions, artist, concept and work-of-art presentations, as well as written material in the advertising field of social media (Facebook, Instagram). The primal aim is to explore and analyze, through close reading, a selection of the chosen genre to see and understand the thematic content and writing style employed in that genre. Students will be expected to attend art events / exhibitions and report on them.

Topics:

1. Introduction to the course

2. Advertising on social media: Writing short art-related ads, posts on Facebook, Instagram. Short press release.

3. Description of a work of art (pure description of the object without value judgement, analysis or interpretation)

4. Catalogue entries (works of art descriptions), artist presentations.

5. Midterm paper

6. Artist statement / Artist interviews / Curator’s introduction

7. Analysis/Interpretation of  works of art/an exhibition. Journalistic art criticim: reviews of art exhibitions in galleries and museums. OPTIONAL. Scholarly art criticism (written for a more specialized art audience, published in art journals; MLA format, bibliography)

8. Endterm Paper: Review Essay (Exhibition review, magazine article)

9. Creative Writing Round-up, evaluation of the course
